When planning your floors layout with handmade tiles, the standard ways of maintaining a uniformed look don't really work like they do with today's rectified porcelain tiles. In this video, I share a technique of how to keep your floor tiles straight and square, when your tiles are anything but straight and square!

Morning friends! Today we're addressing floor flatness for tile! Because this tile is handmade, the specs from TCNA allow for a little more variation than what's common for most of the tile you'll see on the market today. Be sure to look up your specific tile and grout size, to find your recommended specifications! With this project we're using a combination of grinding and self leveling underlayment to achieve the required flatness of our substrate. Tile on!

Trying out BUILT with FOAM shower shim system and I gotta say, I'm impressed! These walls are as flat AND plumb as can be! And as always, Dyna Crete deck mud is always the very best to work with. Keep an eye out for this massive neo-angle shower soon!

Here's a short video illustrating how we tile setters accomplish a perfectly flush wall when installing tiles of different heights. It's these small tricks that really give you that look of a polished final installation. Oh, and don't mind the thinset on my face. 🤣It only helps to confirm that I am the one performing my installations and not an employee. HAPPY TILING!
Another completed shower, with 12x24 porcelain 'marble' field tile, herringbone marble niche and Hexagon marble pan. Please don't mind the shading in the grout as it was still in the drying process. I also installed the floor, 12x24 faux stone but forgot to film it. Enjoy! And the insurance replacement for my phone came in so you can get ahold of me through normal means. I'm so hard on my phones, this is my second replacement inside a year!

As these tiles grow in size, the need to meet or exceed industry standards grows with it. You need at least 90% coverage (95% in wet areas) of thinset to tile, to ensure a long lasting and sound installation. These larger tiles usually require you to use a notch trowel on both the substrate and the tile for full coverage. I was just talking with another installer that happened to be walking by this job and he recommended I, "use a lot of dots!" to stick these tiles.. no way! Too many installers are fighting for the cheapest rates and in turn are taking the fast and easy way out, using the "dot" method. This is where they'll use randomly placed globs of thinset to adhere their LFT's to the tile substrate. (Ex. in the comments) They'll be lucky to hit 20% coverage using those methods! That's dangerous! 90% is recommended for all tile but if you're choosing these 24x48 monster slabs of porcelain, be positive your installer knows what he's doing and is using the correct methods to stick these tiles. Imagine if one of these 8 square foot tiles fell off the wall??

Check out that precision machining! BIG shout out to @solameasuringtools for replacing AND upgrading, not one but TWO levels for me! I admittedly bought the baseline model, treated them poorly and even with that, Sola honored their lifetime warranty and shot me a couple brand new #bigred levels. Lifetime customer here! Garrett installed an arabesque ceramic tile backsplash for our kitchen. Each piece had to be set individually. Garrett did a super job matching the pattern in the corners. He was very meticulous and tidy and we found Garrett very professional and easy to work with. We highly recommend Garrett!

Garrett did a kitchen backsplash installation with handmade tile. We had a particular way that we wanted the grout lines to flow downward so that the lines looked like flowing water (or steam rising), and he did an amazing job. He has an artistic eye and had great suggestions for how to make the backsplash look its best! Even the room corners where the tiles come together look amazing! We highly recommend Garrett for his attention to detail, punctuality and hard work.
